From Cost Centre to Strategic Partner: The Evolution of Procurement Leadership

Nicholas Lim
I have experience from E2E. From Procurement Operation up to P2P. I have also performed Strategic and Tactical Sourcing, which is the front end of the procurement function. Leading Tools and System Implementation and Helpdesk. With all the exposure of my experience, I can connect the dots for my team to resolved vendors issues. On stakeholder management, I can provide value-added support by informing them to Leaving Vendors issue is with me while you focus on driving Revenue for the business.
The same experience also shaped how I think about cost, risk and what truly matters when managing suppliers. This is based on the business culture from my perspective. In a growing business, there are instance that cost efficiency may not be a priority, but the Vendor deliverables and minimum risk, there are instances where businesses are mature where it’s time to be cost efficient and work with the vendor to optimize cost and ensure deliverables are at BAU but on a higher scaling model.
From Structural Barriers to Digital Solutions
I believed in structure, process and Culture.

If leaders follow the process, this will help to strengthen the value added on all process improvement done, including automation.
Addressing these challenges, however, is increasingly being supported by digital tools and automation that are fundamentally changing how procurement teams operate. At this era 2026, I find that Cost Analysis automation helps Procurement Leaders to make decisions quickly and save time in preparing such data. While on the Supplier end, with Automated POs, Invoicing and Automated Evaluation Process, this helps to reduce transactional work and increase the speed of Strategic Procurement and Decision making timeline.
Beyond Transactions: Procurement as a Strategic Business Partner
On Agility, “One organization must be willing to change or at least try to meet the minimum of the current Market. Example, if a minimum is a Soft copy PO, the Organization must be willing to change at least to provide a Soft Copy PO vs a Manual Hard Copy PO (Most of the time sits with smaller organization). Meanwhile, on Risk Management, I think Procurement is open to Processes that bypass the Procurement function or policy, hence there should be control on documentation or from the Tools and systems in order to avoid Risk of exposure or failure on Vendor Delivery. Strategic Sourcing, in my POV, covers a lot of the pipeline and future Business direction. Example Procurement must under global issues in order to help to plan Long Term Contracts and Latest Market Solution. This helps during Renewal or even a new Business Request, where we can help to provide input on whether it’s a good decision or a Must-have vs Nice to Have? to ensure the business makes the right decision.
